A modern approach to dry eye

E-Eye IRPL is an innovative medical technology designed for the treatment of dry eye syndrome caused by meibomian gland dysfunction.

The treatment uses regulated intense pulsed light (IRPL), applied to the periocular area, to act on the mechanisms involved in evaporative dry eye.

E-Eye® is available in the Republic of Moldova at Clinica Oculus Prim.

Why does evaporative dry eye occur?

The role of the meibomian glands

Meibomian glands are located along the eyelid margins and produce the lipid component of the tear film.

When the function of these glands is impaired, the lipid layer of the tear film can no longer adequately protect the ocular surface, and tears evaporate more quickly.

This mechanism can cause dryness, burning, foreign body sensation, eye fatigue, visual fluctuations and discomfort, especially during prolonged screen use.

In these situations, treatment should target not only temporary tear replacement, but also improvement of meibomian gland function.

Meibomian glands and dry eye
Meibomian gland dysfunction can contribute to accelerated evaporation of the tear film.

Signs that may accompany dry eye

Common symptoms

  • feeling of dryness or sand in the eyes;
  • burning and irritation;
  • foreign body sensation;
  • eye redness;
  • eye fatigue;
  • fluctuating vision;
  • discomfort during prolonged screen use.

Contributing factors

  • prolonged computer and other screen use;
  • incomplete or reduced blinking;
  • meibomian gland dysfunction;
  • inflammation of the eyelid margins;
  • exposure to air conditioning or dry air;
  • contact lens use.

What does E-Eye® treatment target?

The treatment is primarily aimed at the mechanisms involved in meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye.

E-Eye® IRPL — dry eye treatment

IRPL light pulses warm and stimulate meibomian gland secretion, reduce inflammation, promote the formation of a healthy tear film and relieve dry eye symptoms.

01
Supporting meibomian gland function
The treatment acts on the periocular area associated with the meibomian glands.
02
Reducing inflammation
IRPL contributes to reducing inflammatory processes associated with gland dysfunction.
03
Improving the tear film
The goal is to achieve a more stable tear film and reduce excessive evaporation.

IRPL technology

E-Eye® uses regulated intense pulsed light (IRPL), applied in a controlled manner to the periocular region.

Light energy is used to act on the mechanisms involved in meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye.

  • procedure performed in the clinic;
  • controlled and standardized treatment;
  • does not require a prolonged recovery period;
  • can be integrated into an individualized treatment plan.

A procedure adapted to the periocular area

Before the procedure, the area is properly prepared, and the patient is provided with eye protection.

Pulses are applied in a controlled manner to the treatment area, with attention to the periocular region and meibomian glands.

  • quick procedure;
  • comfortable for the patient;
  • does not require general anesthesia;
  • does not involve a conventional recovery period.
Dry eye evaluation

Before treatment, dry eye evaluation is important

Dry eye can have different causes and mechanisms. Therefore, E-Eye® treatment is indicated after evaluation of the ocular surface and meibomian gland function.

  • evaluation of symptoms and ocular discomfort;
  • tear film analysis;
  • evaluation of the lipid layer;
  • evaluation of tear film break-up time;
  • evaluation of the meibomian glands;
  • identification of factors that may maintain symptoms.

How is the treatment performed?

E-Eye® treatment is performed in the clinic, according to a protocol established based on the patient's evaluation.

01
Preparation of the area
The periocular area is prepared for the procedure.
02
Eye protection
The patient is provided with the necessary protective measures.
03
Application of IRPL pulses
Pulses are applied in a controlled manner to the periocular region.
04
Completion of the procedure
After treatment, the patient can return to normal activities.

The treatment is performed in sessions

The E-Eye® protocol generally involves several sessions, performed at intervals recommended by the doctor.

Depending on the ocular condition and response to treatment, the doctor may establish an individualized protocol.

  • usually, 3–4 sessions are required;
  • the intervals between sessions are established according to the protocol;
  • progress is monitored throughout the treatment.
The number and frequency of sessions are determined individually, based on the ophthalmological evaluation and the patient's response.

What is monitored after treatment?

The goal of treatment is to improve symptoms and tear film stability by supporting meibomian gland function.

  • reduction of dryness;
  • reduction of burning and foreign body sensation;
  • improvement of ocular comfort;
  • improvement of tear film stability;
  • reduction of vision fluctuations associated with dry eye.

Results and the rate of improvement vary from patient to patient and depend on the cause and severity of the dysfunction.

Dry eye treatment with IRPL technology

E-Eye® IRPL is available in the Republic of Moldova at Clinica Oculus Prim, where evaluation and treatment are integrated into a medical approach to dry eye syndrome.

Before starting treatment, the doctor evaluates the characteristics of the dry eye and determines whether IRPL therapy is appropriate for the patient.

E-Eye® treatment does not replace ophthalmological evaluation. The treatment protocol is selected individually, depending on the mechanism and severity of dry eye.

About E-Eye® treatment

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about dry eye treatment with IRPL technology.

Is E-Eye® treatment painful?
The procedure is designed to be comfortable. The patient may perceive the light pulses, but the treatment does not involve surgery.
How long does one session take?
The procedure is quick and is performed in the clinic. The exact duration may vary depending on the protocol established for the patient.
How many sessions are needed?
In general, the protocol involves 3–4 sessions. The number and intervals between them are determined individually by the doctor, based on the patient's evaluation and progress.
Can I return to normal activities after the procedure?
E-Eye® is a treatment performed in the clinic and does not usually require a long recovery period.
Is E-Eye® suitable for every form of dry eye?
The treatment is primarily intended for situations in which meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye play an important role. Medical evaluation is required before determining the indication.
Is an evaluation necessary before treatment?
Yes. Evaluation is important for identifying the mechanism of dry eye and establishing a treatment plan adapted to the patient.
Can E-Eye® replace artificial tears?
E-Eye® treatment and the use of artificial tears have different roles. Depending on the patient's situation, the doctor determines which measures are necessary and whether they should be combined.
