Students learn about vision and eye care at “Healthy Hour” with the “Oculus Prim” experts
The “Oculus Prim” Medical Center, in partnership with the Center for Health Information and Communication (CICS), runs the “Health Hour” project in the capital's schools. Within it, “Oculus Prim” experts visit primary school pupils to share essential health information about healthy eyes and vision.
Recently, “Health Hour” took place in 3 educational institutions, where students learned how to look after their eyes to keep their visual acuity for a long time.
The experts of the Oculus Prim Medical Center, who have taken the role of teachers for one hour, use attractive and interactive methods, as well as simple and clear language for the young.
In the first part of the program children learn basic information about the structure of the eye, how the image we are seeing is formed, etc. The next part provides curious information about the human eye, but also incredible facts about the diverse vision in the animal world. The children react with enthusiasm, ask many questions and want to know as much as possible about what they hear.
In the Practical part of the “Health Hour”, experts provide the children with precious eye care tips and “don’t” examples, about gestures/habits which they should avoid.
Then the whole class learns and applies special visual gymnastics techniques, very important for a healthy vision, especially in the case of the young.
An equally important task for “Oculus Prim” experts in the project is to identify the myths and stereotypes circulating among students and to explain how things really are. Thanks to the Center's experience in working with children, the experts are able to convince them, for example:
- that it is not shameful to wear glasses,
- that it is important to understand how their eyes work, and if they suspect an irregularity, tell the parents,
- that the visit to the ophthalmologist should not scare them, because it does not hurt and can even be very fun.
During the last session, at the beginning of the lesson one of the students with vision problems said he would never wear glasses. After the “Health Hour”, where he found out more about the visual disturbances and the necessary treatments, and tested the right eyeglasses, the boy's opinion changed radically.
His colleagues were also curious to try on the glasses brought by “Oculus Prim”, being very impressed by the Swing frames – flexible and extremely durable, made especially for children.
The “Health Hour” lesson cycle is part of the “Oculus Prim” Corporate Social Responsibility program, which aims to promote a healthy lifestyle, contributing to early detection of visual disturbances and informing children about the importance of vision health and care.
